A small incision is made in the molar or premolar area and a small window is created in the upper jaw to reach the sinus membrane.
The sinus membrane is gently lifted and bone grafting material is placed into the space. Donor grafts are commonly used so that a second surgical site is not required.
The site is closed with sutures. Over roughly six months, the graft integrates and becomes part of your natural jawbone, giving you the volume needed for implant placement.
Following the verbal and written instructions we provide is important. For at least two weeks, avoid blowing your nose and sneeze with your mouth open to protect the graft. If allergies are a concern, a nasal decongestant may help.
Keep your head elevated during the first week and avoid bending over to lift heavy objects. Avoid trauma to the site from food or aggressive brushing so the surgical area can heal quietly.
We provide a specialized rinse to keep the area clean during recovery. With careful aftercare, the graft integrates predictably and prepares the site for a stable, long-term implant restoration.
