When to Refer

Clinical Triggers We Welcome

You know your patient best. These are the situations where a specialist consult tends to help, clarify a plan, add surgical capability, or give the patient a second set of eyes before treatment. Refer when it feels right; there is no threshold too early.

Periodontal disease

• Pocket depths of 5mm or greater that do not respond to hygiene
• Bleeding on probing that persists after non-surgical therapy
• Radiographic bone loss, horizontal or vertical
• Mobility, furcation involvement, or recurrent abscess
• Patients with diabetes, cardiovascular history, or immune concerns where periodontal control matters

Implants and surgical site preparation

• Single or multiple implant placement, including immediate placement
• Full-arch (All-on-X) planning and placement
• Socket preservation at the time of extraction
• Ridge augmentation, sinus lift (internal or lateral), or bone grafting
• Peri-implantitis workup and treatment

Soft tissue and cosmetic

• Gingival recession with sensitivity or esthetic concern
• Inadequate keratinized tissue around teeth or implants
• Crown lengthening, functional or esthetic
• Frenum concerns, gummy smile, or pre-orthodontic tissue evaluation

Sedation and complex cases

For patients who need IV or oral sedation, or for medically complex cases, we are happy to coordinate. Send us the referral with a note on what you are watching for and we will build the plan around it.

How we communicate back

You receive a report after the consult and updates as treatment progresses. Every patient returns to your practice for restorative care and ongoing maintenance, the goal is coordinated care, not a handoff.
